Hi everyone, while I was reading an article about facebook news feed optimization I was going through the comments and I found a question about how the facebook Edge Rank works and how we can improve it, then it came to my mind to write for my lovely readers about it, So in this post I will discuss with you the facebook edge Rank formula, I have explained it in a simple way and make it so clear so you don’t get confused.
By the way, next week I will write an article that include tips to increase your facebook edge rank score , here is how to increase your Facebook edgerank effectiveness score.
What is the facebook Endge Rank formula?
Firstly you have to know that Facebook NFO and Edge Rank work together “NFO: is a short-cut of News Feed optimization” is the practice of optimizing your new updates so that you appear in the top news feed wall. The more edge rank you have the more visibility you will get into the facebook NFO.
After reading this post please consider reading Guide to Facebook seo it is a post the I have written about facebook news feed optimization.
IMPORTANT: As you can see in the image below, one of the changes that Facebook has done was the addition of the blue angle in the top left corner to unmark a top story and more options are available in the “dropdown menu” located on the top right of each update. Facebook will make a use for this to know what’s best to show up in users news feeds. The thing is, since users have more control over their news feeds, pages with boring or irrelevant content will have a lower visibility into their fans news feeds. So your contents have to be amazing.

Facebook Edge Rank
As you know Google uses Pagerank, Facebook calls it Edge Rank. Every piece of content on Facebook, whether a personal profile created it or a fan page created it, it must passed through the filter, which is facebook Edge Rank.
Moreover, No one knows exactly how Facebook NFO works or the facebook Edge Rank score, it is basically an algorithm. The exact algorithm is under lock and key, and I think all the experts in the world don’t necessarily know the precise algorithm, maybe only Mark Zuckerberg knows it.
There are three primary components of Facebook edge Rank :
1- Affinity Score The first component of news feed optimization is the affinity score. Think of that as the relationship that your fans have with not just your fan page but that specific piece of content.
2- Weight In addition, you’ve got the weight. There are various types of content, obviously whether it is a well-posed photo, video or link etc. So that’s must be taken into account. Down below is the type of contents from the heavier to the lesser facebook Edge Rank weight.
1- Photos. Tend to get heavier facebook Edge Rank weight.
2- Videos.
3- Links.
4- Status updates.
5- Questions.
6- Apps. Updates through apps get lesser facebook Edge Rank weight.
3-Time Decay (Recency) Then there’s what we call “time decay” also known as recency. Basically, it’s how long ago the piece of content or that wall post was created they call it edge.
Lastly, what’s really important to understand is that every one of your fans has a different facebook Edge Rank score with every piece of your content. You often see things out there reports and different systems, where you can get a score and you’ll find out how to prove your facebook Edge Rank score. But it’s not like you have a score that you can improve with all fans. Each fan has a different one, and it depends on how often you get them to interact, this is the game of Facebook news feed optimization.

Thanks Andri
I wasn’t amazed if photos got the number one spot for the weight. It’s pretty obvious because they actually made that kind of look wherein, people can see a primary photo and two secondary photos.
It was my 2nd time to read a blog post about FB optimization but the previous post haven’t mentioned any points like what you did so great job!

So if photos have the biggest weight, then it’s a good idea to post photos everyday.
Even if this post is from the other year, still very useful until today. Thanks Faissal

Hi Faissal,
I read about this a few months back and kind of got it. Not quite sure if I totally agree with what they are trying to accomplish here because it seems like every time I post someone on my wall it ends up in the top news feed. I don’t care what it is, it’s always there. It’s not top stuff sometimes you know! That’s why I question how this all really does work down the line.
What do I know though right! I want my content at the top so I’m not really complaining, just confused how that all works.
Will look forward to your post on increasing page rank. That ought to be interesting.
Thanks Faissal…

I don’t really get what you are confusing about but you need to know that facebook picks the best content for you even though it doesn’t have likes or comments, it may be a content that you are interesting to, facebook knows that from the content you have been interacting with before.

I have never heard about Edge Rank, but the formula and the details in this article are quite interesting. Not often do you see something completely new especially when you read a lot of different blogs and have been around for a while. This was one of the most interesting things I read all week.

I think the three things you mentioned are definitely factors in the Edge Rank formula. I would also think how many likes and how many comments there are has a lot to do with the Edge Rank formula as well.

Hey Faissal,
Fantastic Edge Rank 101 here. I didn’t know what this was all about til a couple of weeks ago. I think it’s cool how FB stays on top of this. At the end of the day, to survive in the modern internet world it’s all about relevance and getting interaction.
Thanks!
Cat

Hello fansbridge.com, we’re The Conversation Group, we’ve created a video “What is Facebook EdgeRank?” http://bit.ly/GE3Wca that your readers may also find useful as a supplement to this article.
Thank you (excuse me, English is not my mother tongue), I find your article well structured, but I think you are biased in your approach to this issue. This is usually the case with this type of subject, the controversy is never far away. Regards, Gerard
